I don’t know if this is unique but I have done it a number of times These old boats are 50 to 100 years old and have not always been treated nicely. Dings and gouges can be found mostly on the deck and sometimes on the hull. An age old trick is to use steam to bring the wood up. I also save sawdust from my belt sander use that dust with Elmer’s wood glue to make a glue paste. If the wood sanded matches the wood to be repaired there can be a fair match and you can fil the void and sand it later. I think this is a better fix than plastic wood.
